An individual registered can apply for Indian OCI under Section 5(1)(g) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. This option becomes available after being registered as an OCI for five years and residing in India for at least one year.

Application Procedure

Step-by-Step Application:

The OCI application process is available online. It’s essential to note that once you’ve submitted your application form online, including photographs and documents, manual changes are not possible. You must fill out a fresh application form if any errors or changes are needed.

After Registration

After successful registration, you must print Part A and Part B of your application. The photograph uploaded on the portal should be 51mm x 51mm in size, without a border, and with a background (not white). Non-compliant photographs may lead to delays in processing.

For Minor Applicants:

If the applicant is a minor, both parents should accompany the child. All relevant documents must be provided with the application. The original passport and receipt are mandatory for card collection.

Documents Required for OCI Application

To apply for an OCI card, you need to submit proof that you or your parents/grandparents were of Indian origin as defined below:

Application 100% Government Compliant:

1. You or your parents held an Indian passport at any time.

2. You, your parents, or grandparents were born in and permanently resided in India, as defined in the Government of India Act, 1935, and in other territories that became part of India. (Note: Excludes individuals who were citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh at any time.)

Various documents can prove your Indian origin, including birth certificates, domicile certificates, school/college leaving certificates, and more. Surrendering an Indian passport:

If you are holding an Indian passport, you must bring the original passport after cancelling it. The original surrender certificate should also be provided during the interview.

Spouse of foreign origin:

Granting an OCI card to the spouse of a foreign citizen of India or an OCI cardholder may require time due to clearance processes. The marriage must be registered and have existed for at least two years before applying. Apostilled Marriage and Birth Certificates must be produced in original after uploading them on the portal.

Minor applicants:

The child’s thumb impression should be placed in the signature box for minors below six.

Claiming Indian origin based on Nativity certificate:

If you claim Indian origin based on a Nativity certificate, it should be issued by the village officer. The document should be attested by the First-Class Magistrate of that place.

Resident Visa and Attestation
